New to site and already need help.

Hello ,just signed on tonight and already looking for help,If I have posted in wrong forum,I apologise

When re-arranging Viewsat Plat -TV-Cable box hook up I inadvertently connected cable to TV to IF OUT port on VS Plat, which started to smoke.I disconnected after a few seconds and reconnected to TV OUT port on VS and has been working without any signs of problems and no over heating.

Are IF components of VS STB associated with video section, would overheating of IF section eventually kill STB?.

Any Views or thoughts would be appreciated.

One reason the platinums are being Fazed out is because of the power supply are very weak, the manufactor in (china) used should we say to small of componites for the unit.
You where very lucky, to remove the connection before any other damage was done to the unit. Just make sure when connected futher componites you dont connect them in the wrong area.
And the (if out) on the back of the receiver is a connection for additional receivers,(piggy backed) onto the FTA unit. It has very limited power suppy,13 volt min, 17 volts max.........and at 250 ma, if another unit is connected to this port and runs of any other than this amount it will drain, and disable the viewsat, by killing the on board power supply circuit...
you where lucky,
hope this explains it alittle better

New to site + vs Plat etc.

Thanks for your reply,To be quite honest with you,it did not make much sense.

I know I over loaded components in the IF section of the VS receiver by hooking cable to TV "to IF port",instead of "out to TV port", My hurried error resulted in SMOKE.Having an Electronics/Telecom background,I know you have to"pull the plug fairly fast"or goodbye. My question was :-Will damage to the IF circuitry have an adverse effect on the Video circuits.

I also do not follow your reference to China,It is my understanding Genuine VS STB's are made in Korea, clones originate in China and are known to have a high failure rate.

I believe VS discontinued manufacture of the Platininum as it was identical to the Extreme except for the component ports, and replaced it with the less expensive VS LITE.

I might be new to the Dvrtalk site, but I have been in this testing game for many years and was simply asking with my negligence and likely damage to the Plat, would it be wiser to buy a new Toy.

ok, first, the power supplys have been made in china for the last two years under contract, depending on the (age) of your unit, you might have one that has them installed in it.
secondlydid it damage the (if out), daultful the unit should still work fine, but again unless you use it, I see no need to try it out.
thirdly, only since VS contract ran out have we seen clones on ther N/A Market, and its not because the platinums where the same as a extreme, alot of difference between hardware on the extreme models, and software on the platinum models.
The biggest difference is cost, and amount of compoinates incorperated into the lite units, are alot less, and the price is still the same as they sold the platinums, so they are making a killing on the lite units.
The best thing is they are installing the extreme power supplies into the lite units, a big improvement over the first units they came out with.
I bought the last platinum a week ago for 125.00usd, and the lite now are selling for 149.00usd, I sure dont see them being cheaper, just cheaper for VS to make.

Again thank you for responding,as I said in my earlier post I find it difficult to comprehend what you are trying to say.If you take the time and carefully read your post as quoted above,I am sure you will see that some words run into each other, have spelling mistakes and some sentences lack punctuation.

If you are the same "Odd Thomas"I have seen listed as a moderator on other FTA sites,I am sure some members are asking after reading your responses to questions in your role of Moderator or what ever, where was this person educated and to what level.

No doubt you are an educated person,it is suggested when you write a response or a new post, proof read it for spelling, punctuation and composition before hitting the "Submit or Send button".By taking a little time to check will reduce mistakes and help make your written words and message clearly understood. This will also eliminate critics, such as myself, from wondering if "Odd Thomas" himself understands what he has written.

No offence intended, this just an honest observation
