How do I upgrade to a HD DVR on my

DirecTV account? I currently have 4 receivers activated that DirecTV sent out when I signed up (1 DVR and 3 Basic). I want to replace one of the Basic receivers with a HD DVR, so I will still be running 4 receivers (1 HD DVR, 1 DVR, and 2 Basic). If I buy a HD DVR from someone, can I use the same smart card out of one of the Basic receivers? Or is it necessary to go through DirecTV to get one? Also, will the same dish work? What about local HD channels?

Thanks

DirecTv may let you use the card from the basic receiver you are replacing in the HD DVR you plan to get or they may tell you that you will have to buy a new card for it.If they let you use your existing card it is a simple thing to have them mate the old card to the new receiver while on the phone. As for the dish you didn't say which type you currently have so I will assume it is a basic 18 inch round type, that type can not receive HD programming and will need to be upgraded which you can also have done by calling customer service. For HD you will need to have the 5 LNB KA/KU band dish.About locals the first question would be do you get locals now?If so then you should get locals in HD if they broadcast in HD.

I dont install DTV, but DN does there's alittle different, if you buy your own HD DVR unit, you will need to call DTV programming and upgrade your package, they can do that over the phone.
The dish is another matter, depending on what Receiver type you buy, will depend on the dish type needed to receiver the HD signal, if upgrading to a DVR/HD unit, a DTV Superdish maybe needed to recver the right programming package on another satellite.
Its just a matter of them scheduling a installer to come out and setup a new dish, is all........but ofcourse unless you sign another contract they arent going to do it for free.
No matter how you go, you need to call the service department, and upgrade your account, Im sure they have packages available to upgrade the HD with a DVR inculded into the installation, they also will need to send you a new active HD card upgrading the programming, your older card will not allow for HD,sorry....
Hope this answer's your question,
