When re-arranging Viewsat Plat -TV-Cable box hook up I inadvertently connected cable to TV to IF OUT port on VS Plat,which started to smoke.I disconnected after a few seconds and reconnected to TV OUT port on VS and has been working without any signs of problems and no over heating.

One reason the platinums are being Fazed out is because of the power supply are very weak, the manufactor in (china) used should we say to small of componites for the unit.
You where very lucky, to remove the connection before any other damage was done to the unit. Just make sure when connected futher componites you dont connect them in the wrong area.
And the (if out) on the back of the receiver is a connection for additional receivers,(piggy backed) onto the FTA unit. It has very limited power suppy,13 volt min, 17 volts max.........and at 250 ma, if another unit is connected to this port and runs of any other than this amount it will drain, and disable the viewsat, by killing the on board power supply circuit...
